About the museum
The museum is housed in the birthplace of Grazia Deledda (1871–1936), the Nuoro-born writer awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Opened on 5 March 1983, it is run by the ISRE, the Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico della Sardegna (Regional Higher Institute of Ethnography of Sardinia).
The first nucleus of the collections was donated by the Madesani-Deledda family, in particular by Fernanda, the writer's daughter-in-law: manuscripts, photographs, documents and personal objects. Over the years the Institute purchased other materials, which made it possible to revise the original display.
The current exhibition highlights the writer's difficult relationship with Nuoro and the personal and literary events that followed her move to Rome. Her biography, the social and cultural environment of Nuoro, family and cultural life in the Roman period, and the award of the Nobel Prize are told through photographs, documents and autobiographical writings.
