About the museum
The Museo comunale Francesco Ciusa is housed in the former courthouse of Nuoro, opposite the cathedral, in Piazza Santa Maria della Neve. It reopened to the public on 4 August 2016, after years of closure, under joint management by the Comune and the Province, entrusted to the MAN museum, which also included the Tribu arts space.
The museum is dedicated to Francesco Ciusa (1883–1949), the pioneer of modern sculpture in Sardinia, who studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence from 1899 and in 1907 presented “La madre dell’ucciso” (The Mother of the Slain Man) at the Venice Biennale. The collection of nearly fifty works includes, among others, “Il ritorno”, “La campana” and “Il cainita”, and a reconstruction of the monument to Sebastiano Satta, erected in 1931 and later destroyed, made from original marble fragments. The former courthouse also housed the exhibition “Sardegna 900”, with Sardinian artists of the first half of the 20th century from the MAN collection.
The building has been closed since February 2018 for renovation work. In 2026 the municipal administration announced the allocation of funds and the start of works, with Ciusa’s works returning to their original home.
