About the museum

The Museo della Ceramica was created in Nuoro after more than twenty years of work, during which the municipal administration and the Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico (ISRE) restored and adapted the spaces of the historic Casa Chironi, a three-storey building from the late 19th century named after the jurist Giampietro Chironi. The municipality bought the property in 2002 and in 2003 granted it to the ISRE; the museum was inaugurated on 20 July 2023.

A small ISRE collection, enriched with donations and acquisitions, now numbers around 300 works, from functional ceramics to art ceramics, from the early 20th century to the post-war period. They illustrate the main artistic schools and the greatest Sardinian masters, such as Francesco Ciusa, Salvatore Fancello, Federico Melis and Edina Altara, first with a strongly identity-based narrative and later opening up to tourism and international experimentation. One section is devoted to works by important Italian ceramicists.

Nuoro was not, unlike Assemini, Oristano, Dorgali and Pabillonis, a centre of ancient ceramic tradition, but its central role in the island's artistic life made it a crossroads of debate on art from the early years of the 20th century. The display, spread across the three floors of the building, was designed by the architect Antonello Cuccu.
