About the museum
The MAN opened to the public in 1999. Born as an office of the provincial culture department, it built its first nucleus of works by bringing together several public collections. Since 2004 it has been an institution with management autonomy and is part of AMACI, the association of Italian contemporary art museums; in 2013 the Region recognised it as a museum of excellence.
The building is a 1920s structure, formerly the seat of the Istituzione provinciale, in the centre of Nuoro. A new exhibition complex, created from two historic buildings in Piazza Sebastiano Satta, is planned.
The collection comprises about 600 works by Sardinian artists from the late 19th century to today, including Antonio Ballero, Giuseppe Biasi, Francesco Ciusa, Mario Delitala, Carmelo Floris, Maria Lai, Mauro Manca and Costantino Nivola, as well as drawings and ceramics by Salvatore Fancello and graphic works by Giovanni Pintori. The works rotate through the exhibition spaces, alternating with temporary exhibitions.
