Museo archeologico nazionale di Pontecagnano

State museum devoted to the frontier Etruscans: finds from over ten thousand burials, reconstructions and an archaeological park of about 22 hectares.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The museum holds the material from the Villanovan and Etruscan-Campanian centre of Pontecagnano, one of the main settlements of the ancient Agro Picentino. The present building is a modern design by the architect Giancarlo Cosenza, built to replace a display from 1978 that had become too small for the collections.

The core of the collection comes from over ten thousand burials excavated in the site's necropoleis over about sixty years. The route is chronological, from the Copper Age to the Roman period, and is arranged in sections devoted to the city, the necropoleis, the sanctuaries and crafts. Main themes include the Iron Age, the Orientalising aristocracy of the “città dei principi” (city of princes), the Archaic city and the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman phases.

The building has three levels: the storage area on the lower ground floor, visitor services, the auditorium and workshops on the ground floor, and the permanent display and spaces for temporary exhibitions on the second floor. The museum is complemented by an archaeological park of about 22 hectares, which includes a block of the Roman city uncovered by excavations, an environmental education centre, an outdoor library and urban gardens.
