About the museum

The museum was opened in September 2012, on the 69th anniversary of the Allied landing at Salerno, under the high patronage of the President of the Republic. The permanent display was created by the association Parco della Memoria della Campania.

The route reconstructs the landing of Operation Avalanche in September 1943 and the period between February and July 1944 when Salerno was the seat of the government of liberated Italy. About 200 items are displayed, including films and photographs, medals, German and American uniforms, weapons, a Sherman tank, a Willys jeep and a sealed railway wagon used for deportations, which arrived in January 2013.

The museum is at Via Generale Mark Clark, at the Istituto Gallotta. In December 2023 it closed temporarily because of structural problems with the building; no reopening date has been announced.
