About the museum
The Museo archeologico nazionale di Sessa Aurunca opened on 18 December 2024 in the Castello Ducale. It arises from an agreement between the Direzione regionale Musei Campania and the municipality of Sessa Aurunca. The display, curated by Carlo Rescigno and Marco Giglio, was realised with PNRR funds (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan) dedicated to accessibility.
The route tells the history of the territory from the Ausoni-Aurunci people, starting from the Iron Age (9th–8th century BC), up to the Roman conquest in 313 BC and the foundation of the Latin colonies of Suessa and Minturnae. The first rooms present the settlements linked to sacred places and the sanctuaries, the best known of which is that of the goddess Marica at the mouth of the Garigliano, with many votive offerings.
The following rooms are devoted to the Roman period: the extra-urban territory with rustic villas and the production of Falernian wine, the funerary areas and the remains of public buildings in Suessa. A special space illustrates the Roman theatre, one of the most imposing discovered in Campania, with the statue of Matidia minore that adorned the frons scenae (the stage wall). On loan for four years is also the Venus of Sinuessa, from the Museo archeologico nazionale di Napoli.
