About the museum
The Museo Diocesano Diffuso Diamare, known as MuDiSe, continues the diocesan museum founded in 1893 by Bishop Giovanni Maria Diamare. After refurbishment work begun in 2017, the museum reopened on 25 March 2023 with a new display in the premises adjoining the cathedral of Santi Pietro e Paolo, in Piazza Duomo.
The route, set out in six rooms and twelve itineraries, traces the diocesan territory from early Christian times to the present. The first room, the Grande Sala, holds archaeological finds from sites in the diocese, including statues, sculptures and pottery; the room dedicated to Pius IX and the adjoining chapel display the bishops’ liturgical vestments; the Cappella San Michele brings together statue groups from various churches of the diocese. The route is completed by the crypt, the lapidarium and a contemporary art room.
The idea is a space of “identity interpretation”: objects, stories and voices of popular piety tell the faith of the community and the events of the territory. The museum is run by the association “In mano all’arte”, made up of young local people, who take care of welcome, openings and visits; educational routes are offered for schools.
