About the museum
The museum grew out of an initiative by a group of young people and enthusiasts from Roccamonfina, determined to recover the community’s historical memory of the Second World War and to place the events that happened in the area in their correct context. In autumn 1943 the village was occupied by German troops: the population suffered requisitions and destruction, and around 500 men were deported to Germany on 23 September.
The association has gathered objects, documents, photographs and relics donated by the population or found in the area of the volcano, which lay along the routes of the armies deployed around Cassino. A permanent exhibition has been set up in some rooms, with helmets, gas masks, mess tins (gavette) and other finds, often in excellent condition.
The exhibition is organised in rooms devoted to the armies that operated in the area: the US Fifth Army, the French Expeditionary Corps (with the battles of the Mainarde and Monte Maio), the British Army divisions, and the Italian and German forces. The museum also organises meetings, workshops, commemorations and guided tours for schools and groups, and presents itself as a place of shared memory rather than a mere container of objects.
