About the museum

The museum in Amendolara, in the province of Cosenza, tells the story of the Upper Ionian coast of Calabria, a territory where local communities came into contact with Greek culture. It is named after Vincenzo Laviola, a physician and scholar who studied the antiquities of the area. It is now part of the Parchi archeologici di Crotone e Sibari (archaeological parks of Crotone and Sibari) of the Ministry of Culture.

The route follows a chronological order. The first section presents material from the Bronze and Iron Ages (15th–8th centuries BC): fragments of pottery, metal tools and ornaments of the indigenous peoples who lived on the Sibari plain before the arrival of Greek colonists.

The sections on Magna Graecia display the grave goods from the necropolises of Paladino and Mangosa (7th–6th centuries BC), with local pottery and pottery imported from Greece, jewellery and weapons that bear witness to relations with the colony of Sibari, and the remains of the settlement of San Nicola (6th century BC), with houses, places of worship and everyday objects. The last section brings together finds from the Roman, Byzantine and medieval periods.
