About the museum
Attilio Mussino, born in Turin in 1878, spent the last years of his life in Vernante, where he is buried. He is regarded as the illustrator who fixed the image of Pinocchio in the popular imagination, to the point of being called “lo zio di Pinocchio” (“Pinocchio's uncle”). His second wife, Margherita Martini, inherited his original works and donated them to the Pro Loco (local tourist association), which in 2005 set up the museum in rooms beneath the old confraternity, near the parish church.
The collection includes oil paintings and watercolours, editions of children's books he illustrated, among them the 1911 “Pinocchio”, which won an award at the Turin International Book Fair the same year, pencil studies, sketches and portraits of well-known figures, as well as the “Pinocchio animato” (animated Pinocchio), published in instalments in “Il Giornalino” and set in Vernante, with recognisable places such as the sanctuary, the parish church and the medieval tower.
Pinocchio murals inspired by Mussino's illustrations are also painted on the façades of the houses in the historic centre.
