About the museum

The museum was founded in 1982 thanks to the donations of Mario Strani (1907–2000), a dentist from Pinerolo with a passion for nature and mushrooms. Strani made plaster and resin casts of mushrooms using techniques he had devised himself, and each model was coloured by hand. A further 3,000 models by the same author are kept in the Civico Museo Didattico di Scienze Naturali di Pinerolo.

The main room presents about 250 species in eighteen display cases, for a total of 1,100 models, with labels giving genus, species, common and dialect names, habitat and edibility. A second room houses fossils, minerals, shells, crustaceans, reptiles, taxidermied animals and more than 130 species of butterflies from the Cuneo area. The route also includes sections on the processing of exotic fibres, silk and ceramics, a corner devoted to inventions, and an exhibition on quarries and kilns.

The museum belongs to the museum network of the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali di Torino and works with the Associazione Micologica Bovesana e delle Alpi Cuneesi.
