About the museum
The Museo Bernardo De Muro in Tempio Pausania is dedicated to the tenor from Gallura, born on 3 November 1881 and died in 1955. He trained at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and became famous in Italy and abroad, above all for his interpretations of Mascagni's operas, especially Isabeau. The museum is set up in the recently restored complex of the former Franciscan college of the Padri Scolopi (Piarist Fathers) and is run by the Fondazione Bernardo De Muro.
The first room tells of his years in Gallura and his friendship with Clelia Garibaldi and the composer Gavino Gabriel, with photographs, letters, cutlery and a gramophone from 1930. The second room documents his international career, which began in 1913, with period photographs, costumes and objects collected on his travels, including Aida at Yankee Stadium in New York in 1925.
The third room holds the stage costumes of his best-known roles, such as Radamès in Aida and Folco in Isabeau, donated by his daughter Dina together with personal items. Visitors can listen to all the recordings from his repertoire in the museum. The tenor's birthplace is in the centre of Tempio.
