About the museum

The museum is housed in Palazzo Pes di Villamarina, in Tempio Pausania, in the ancient medieval settlement of Villa Templi. The Pes family rose to prominence in the 17th century, and in 1711 Francesco Pes was granted the title of Marquis of Villamarina.

The palace later became the bishop’s residence and the seat of the minor seminary; in 1933 the property passed entirely to the Church. The building was abandoned in the 1960s of the 20th century and remained neglected for decades, until it was restored in 2000 and assigned to cultural functions.

The collections include sacred silverware, liturgical furnishings, paintings, statues, vestments and a heritage of books and documents, largely from the sacristy of the cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo. There is also the Bernardo Demuro civic fund and archaeological material from the municipal territory. The palace also houses the historic library, with rare 16th-century printed books, and the diocesan offices for cultural heritage. Among the works is a statue of Saint Sebastian by the sculptor Pierre Pouget.
