About the museum
For about three centuries, from the mid-16th to the mid-19th century, Aggius was the centre of banditry in Gallura. The museum tells this phenomenon through its social and cultural roots, without glorifying violence, and is housed in the former Pretura (magistrates’ court), a granite building in the oldest part of the village.
The route occupies four rooms and brings together court files, records of criminal trials, period photographs, weapons, clothing and personal objects. A 19th-century carabinieri (police) office has been reconstructed, with portraits and biographies of some well-known bandits. One room is dedicated to Sebastiano Tansu, known as the “Muto di Gallura”, whose story inspired a novel by Enrico Costa; other themes are the feud between the Vasa and Mamia families (1849–1857), which caused dozens of deaths, smuggling and resistance to authority.
