About the museum

The Museo Per Via opened in 2014 in Pieve Tesino and commemorates the travelling print sellers who, from the 18th to the 19th century, left the Tesino valley to sell their images across Europe. The museum also tells the story of the community and of how it managed to escape a subsistence economy: the men travelled, while the women stayed in the valley.

The Tesini were a mountain people whose economy was originally based on pastoralism. Peddling developed above all through the relationship with the Remondini family of Bassano, who used Tesino sellers to distribute their prints; over time they moved from flint stones to lighter and more profitable goods. Trade declined when the new European borders made it difficult to travel freely.

The museum has been run since its opening by the Fondazione Trentina Alcide De Gasperi, with the support of the local community and the Municipality of Pieve Tesino. The print collection brings together works from various European printing houses, acquired through private donations and targeted purchases.
