About the museum
Schloss Moos-Schulthaus stands in the hamlet of Pigenò, in the municipality of Appiano sulla Strada del Vino. In the mid-13th century the Rottenburger family built a Romanesque residential tower there, which was extended around the mid-14th century into a Gothic hunting lodge. After the Rottenburg line died out, in 1410 the complex passed to the territorial princes and then to the Firmian lords as a hereditary fief. Around 1500 the Spaur counts remodelled it, and until the mid-19th century it belonged to the Schulthaus nobility.
In 1958 the merchant and patron Walther Amonn from Bolzano bought the castle, which had been used for farming. He restored and furnished it, and later opened it to the public through the Walther Amonn Foundation.
Today the castle is visited with a guide. It holds important frescoes, original inhabited rooms, art objects from various periods, folk crafts and paintings by contemporary Tyrolean artists.
