About the museum
The Civico Museo di Masone was officially founded in 1980 and from the outset was inspired and curated by Andrea Tubino, after whom it is named today. Its statute states that its purpose is to collect and preserve evidence of local history, with particular attention to archaeological material of every period, objects of popular use and the material traces of work in the Valle Stura.
The museum is in the historic centre of the town, in the former Augustinian convent, and extends over several floors. On the first floor six rooms house the ethnographic and archaeological collections and a rich collection of crib figures: around 150 pieces of Baroque date from the Neapolitan and Genoese schools, in ceramic, wood and terracotta.
On the first semi-basement floor, open onto the courtyard, are the temporary exhibitions and the mechanised Nativity scene. On the second semi-basement floor, where the convent’s 17th-century ovens are preserved, a nail-maker’s forge has been reconstructed with original pieces.
