About the museum
The Civic Archaeological Museum was established in 1882 and is among the first to be founded in the Marche. It is dedicated to its founder, Count Aristide Gentiloni Silverj (1844–1936), royal inspector of excavations and monuments for the province of Macerata from 1880 and director of the museum until 1936. The initial core came from the excavations that Silverj himself carried out from 1879 to 1882 in the Picene necropolises around Tolentino (Settedolori, Rotondo, Bura, Benadduci and Sant’Egidio), to which were added private donations and finds from the investigations of the heritage authority.
Once housed in the complex of the Basilica di San Nicola, the museum is now arranged over two floors in the north wing of the Castello della Rancia, reopened to the public on 17 May 2025 after restoration works following the earthquake. The display cases, accompanied by panels, tell the story of the area from the Lower Palaeolithic and of the 19th-century excavation campaigns.
In the large first-floor hall, after an introduction devoted to Gentiloni Silverj and a case of stone tools from the area, are displayed the grave goods of the Picene necropolises, surface finds and Roman-period material, including inscriptions from ancient Tolentinum. Among the most remarkable pieces is a female statue of the Flavian period.
