About the museum
The museum is housed in the “La Tela” weaving workshop of Ginesi and Varagona, founded in 1986 and now located in Vicolo Vecchio in Macerata, in the renovated premises of a former carpentry workshop. The workshop carries on the textile tradition of the area, makes items on antique hand looms and combines its production with cultural and educational projects.
The museum route, set up inside the workshop, is divided into three areas: the Corridor of Tools and Memory, the Liccetti Weaving Corner and the Garden of Dye and Fibre Plants. It is a collection of catalogued objects, some of which have been given a status beyond everyday use, to tell the language, symbols and words that grew out of textile work.
In the corridor, beyond the wrought-iron entrance gate, traditional spinning tools are displayed, such as the gramola (flax brake), the distaff, the spindle, the reel and the aspo (yarn reel). The liccetti weaving corner shows an antique loom and the technique by which decorative designs were programmed with cords. The small inner garden holds a sample collection of dye and fibre plants for educational activities. Guided tours, creative workshops, weaving courses and loom experiences can be booked in advance.
