About the museum
The archaeological collection occupies the Sala delle Oliere (the oil store), a room beneath the north side of the cloister of the Abbey of Chiaravalle di Fiastra, which was once used to store the oil made from the olives of the monks’ fields. The small openings onto the cloister served for ventilation rather than light, to protect the oil.
Most of the finds come from Urbs Salvia, the Roman city near present-day Urbisaglia, and derive from the excavation campaigns that the Giustiniani Bandini family began in the late 18th century. The collection was later enriched with other material, reflecting the link between the abbey and the ancient city.
The display includes numerous funerary inscriptions recounting the lives of some inhabitants, portraits of Augustus and Drusus the Elder, a basalt weight, a cinerary urn, an amphora recovered from the Adriatic Sea and architectural fragments from the early phases of the abbey church. The visit is part of the abbey route, run by the Fondazione Giustiniani Bandini.
