About the museum
The museum takes its name from Don Cesare Cellini, a canon of the cathedral, who gathered the first materials and founded it in 1877. Today it is a civic collection of Ripatransone, in the southern Marche, housed in the palace overlooking Piazza XX Settembre, where the tourist office is also located.
Of some 4,000 finds held, including coins, around 500 are on display in five rooms and a corridor. Almost all come from the municipal territory and allow the occupation of the area to be traced from prehistory to Roman civilisation: Palaeolithic and Neolithic–Eneolithic stone tools, Bronze Age materials and, above all, evidence of the Iron Age, that is, the Picene civilisation of the 9th–3rd centuries BC, largely of the 6th century BC.
The Roman section includes oil lamps, cinerary urns, a marble bust of Venus, a fragment of a fresco in the Pompeian style and a lapidarium with inscriptions. Since 1998 a medieval section has been displayed on the raised ground floor, with a carved baptismal font and Lombard fibulae, while since 2001 a modern section has preserved curiosities such as a brick used to wall up the Holy Door of St Peter's in 1775.
