About the museum
The Villa Marittima is a private Roman residence dating from the late 1st century BC to the early 1st century AD, located in the Paese Alto of San Benedetto del Tronto, in piazza Sacconi, near the Torre dei Gualtieri. It was abandoned in the 4th century AD, and the site later became a cemetery area.
The building was uncovered by excavations in 2010; the Comune, in agreement with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici delle Marche (Superintendency for Archaeological Heritage of the Marche), undertook its redevelopment and musealisation, and opened it to the public in 2020.
Visible are mosaics, masonry structures with coloured plasters, two communicating residential rooms, the corner of a painted portico, tanks for processing garum (fish sauce), part of the wine-production area and red frescoes imitating zebrino marble. Part of the site lies inside the former Scuola Sciarra, while the outdoor area in piazza Sacconi is protected by transparent display cases. The site is managed by the Museo del Mare.
