About the museum
The museum is housed in the convent complex of San Francesco, in the highest part of the hill of Monterubbiano, and since September 2007 has been part of the Polo culturale San Francesco, restored with funds from the 1997 earthquake. The convent, documented from the mid-13th century, had a long history of transformations: suppressed in 1860, it later served as a barracks, a nursery and a seat of social and health services before becoming a cultural centre.
The archaeological collection was established at the beginning of the 20th century, following the interest aroused by finds made between the 19th and 20th centuries at Colle Coccaro (a Roman necropolis), in the locality of San Gregorio (a Roman villa) and in the locality of Crocefisso (a Picene necropolis).
The route is arranged in four rooms by chronology and type: Picene pottery and everyday objects, Picene weapons such as arrowheads, swords and a helmet, Roman materials with oil lamps, unguentaria and cinerary urns, and a numismatic collection of about 500 Roman, medieval and papal coins named after Stefano Mircoli. The complex also includes an auditorium (in the former church, with 15th-century frescoes), a library, an exhibition hall, an environmental education centre and a botanical garden.
