About the museum
The Museo della Fabbrica di San Domenico is housed in the former convent of San Domenico, built between 1638 and 1774 at the initiative of Monsignor Giacinto Petronio, a Dominican friar who became bishop of Molfetta. After the suppression of the religious orders the building passed to the municipality and was used for various purposes, until its current use as a museum and cultural venue.
On the first floor, together with the municipal library “G. Panunzio”, the children's library and the philatelic section, the museum unfolds across exhibition rooms and a gallery corridor. The themes are the sea, the territory, art and faith, with evidence from the major historical and cultural periods: the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, 19th and 20th centuries.
On the ground floor the building houses the “Beniamino Finocchiaro” conference hall, the “Giulio Cozzoli” plaster cast gallery (Gipsoteca) and the municipal historical archive. In the former ice house is the ethnographic exhibition “De li mastri lavoranti vascelli nei cantieri di Molfetta”, curated by Archeoclub, with drawings, models and work equipment.
