About the museum
The Museo civico archeologico di Bonorva is housed in a wing of the former convent attached to the church of Sant'Antonio, in the historic centre of the town. The collection is mainly of stone and takes visitors on a journey back in time from the Middle Ages to prehistory, with an educational guide called “Lapis” that explains the archaeology of the area.
The entrance is through a stone portal from the 17th century, decorated in memory of the picapedrers, the stonecutters who shaped the appearance of Bonorva in those centuries. The highlight of the display is the Roman period, with numerous milestones (miliari), the road markers that showed the distance in miles from the main cities. The road from Karalibus to Olbia in fact began near Bonorva.
Among the most striking pieces is a full-scale reproduction of the Tomba delle Spirali of Sa Pala Larga, a domus de janas (rock-cut tomb) with a pillar carved with a bovine protome and spiral motifs. The museum has been run since 1999 by the Cooperativa Costaval, which also looks after the Sant’Andrea Priu necropolis. It is currently closed for restoration work.
