About the museum
The Fondazione Tito Balestra is named after the poet Tito Balestra (Longiano 1923 – Rome 1976). His widow, Anna Maria De Agazio, donated the works that form the core of the collection, which was later enlarged through bequests and donations from friends and relatives. The foundation received legal recognition in 1989, moved into the Castello Malatestiano in Longiano and opened to the public in June 1991.
The foundation is a gallery of modern and contemporary art that permanently displays part of its collections and also organises exhibitions, conferences and meetings. In 2010 it was among the first museums in Emilia-Romagna to receive the quality recognition provided for by regional law 18/2000.
The heritage includes the original collection of more than two thousand works by Italian and foreign artists, among them Mafai, Rosai, De Pisis, Sironi, Guttuso, Morandi, Chagall, Matisse and Twombly; the Mino Maccari fund with 1,903 pieces, including paintings and prints; and other funds, such as those of Tano Citeroni and Leonardo Castellani. The foundation also runs educational activities through the CIDO (Centro italiano di didattica operativa), founded in 1999.
