About the museum
The Rocca Malatestiana, also known as the Rocca del Sasso, stands on the rocky spur overlooking Verucchio and is among the largest and best-preserved Malatesta fortresses. Its structure combines and overlaps architecture datable from the 12th to the 16th century.
It was here that Mastin Vecchio, the founding ancestor of the Malatesta family, established himself; he is mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy. Among the parts open to visitors are the 13th-century cistern, still in working order, and the keep with its panoramic terrace.
Today the fortress houses a collection of medieval weapons, including a model of the first firearm to appear in the West, 15th-century armour and a 15th-century bombard. A combined ticket also allows visitors to see the nearby Museo Civico Archeologico.
