About the museum
The Museo civico di Bovino is housed in Palazzo Pisani and offers an overview of the forms of settlement in this centre of the Subappennino Dauno (Daunian Subapennines) and its territory. In 1925 the museum took shape around the collection of Carlo Gaetano Nicastro, which still forms its core.
Given the nature of the collection, the museum is mainly an archaeological museum, but it also holds objects from more recent periods and can be regarded as the museum of the town's history. The route is divided into four sections: prehistoric, pre-Roman, Roman, and from the early Middle Ages to the nineteenth century.
Among the most valuable finds are several anthropomorphic stelae, black impasto vessels of the Eneolithic period, ceramic fragments, Neolithic axes and arrowheads, Iron Age pottery typical of Daunia and terracotta figurines. The Roman period is documented by inscriptions, a black-and-white mosaic, fragments of statues and capitals, iron weapons, oil lamps and unguentaria. The museum also holds eighteenth-century majolica and nineteenth-century marble statues and busts.
