About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Bovino was founded in 1999 by Monsignor Giuseppe Casale to preserve the cultural heritage of the former diocese of Bovino. It closed in 2006 for renovation work and reopened on 23 April 2008. It is housed in a wing of the ducal castle, built on Roman remains, enlarged under Frederick II and turned into a residence by the Guevara dukes in the 17th century; the complex includes a cylindrical Norman tower and a clock tower.
The rooms hold the treasure of the former cathedral: a 14th- to 15th-century copper crucifix, a reliquary in the shape of Saint Mark’s arm, a 15th-century monstrance by Pietro Vannini, a processional cross, 16th-century copes and chasubles, and a 17th-century episcopal cross and chalice. Two 17th-century canvases are also on display, a Saint Sebastian attributed to Mattia Preti and a Crucifixion of Saint Peter, as well as statues of Saint Andrew and an Archangel.
In the palace chapel there is a silver reliquary that contains a fragment of a thorn from Christ’s crown.
