About the museum
The museum is housed in the former Benedictine monastery, opposite the cathedral of Troia. The convent was founded in 1605, as two marble plaques on the façade recall. An early reference to the museum dates from a letter of 1923 in which Cardinal Gasparri asked the Italian ecclesiastical institutions for a report on the cultural goods in their possession.
The rooms follow one another along the arches of the cloister and include, among others, the Sala dei Misteri (room of the Mysteries), the Sala dell'Annunziata, the Sala dei Flabelli (room of the liturgical fans), the Sala dei Capitelli (room of the capitals), the Sala di Nostra Signora and the crypt.
The collection includes bronze sculptures and paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries, marbles from the cathedral, a painted statue of the Madonna carved in 1448 by Giovanni da Casalbore, a 16th-century wooden polyptych with the Madonna delle Grazie between Saints Leonard and Anthony the Abbot, and a capital from the Swabian period, the most valuable piece, of which a twin is in the Metropolitan Museum of New York. Several exhibitions are set up each year.
