About the museum
The castle stands in a strategic position on the border between Irpinia, Lucania and Daunia, at the exit of the Campanian passes towards Apulia. It is said that in Roman times it was called Artemisium; the present name derives from the relics of Saint Agatha, carried from Catania to Rome in 592. In the Lombard period it was the last outpost of the Duchy of Benevento, and in the Middle Ages it was the seat of a military and administrative district.
After the Norman conquest it passed to Roger II, who wanted the fortress because from above it could defend much of Apulia. Under Frederick II, writs (1239 and 1250) were issued obliging numerous towns to repair it. Later it belonged to the Marquesses Loffredo, who had the portrait of the legendary captain Agatone painted beneath the vault of the atrium, still visible today.
The entrance is accessible by wheelchair. Within the complex is the church of Sant'Agata.
