About the museum
The Museo civico Casa del Duca is located in the upper part of Carloforte, in the Carlo Emanuele III fort, built in spring 1738, the year the town was founded. It was the first masonry building of the emerging settlement, conceived as a guardhouse and later used as a district prison. After a complete restoration it now houses the museum, which has six rooms and a garden.
The Tonnara room (tuna fishery) collects finds and tools linked to tuna fishing, with a model of a tuna fishery built by an old rais (fishing boss) and one of a 19th-century plant for processing and preserving tuna. The Galanzieri room presents documents and instruments of the boatmen who carried the ore by sailing ship. The Documents room holds reproductions of texts from the first years of the colonisation of the island of San Pietro, such as the plan of the first urban nucleus and the oath of allegiance of the Tabarchin community to the House of Savoy in 1738.
The route also includes a rich collection of Mediterranean shells, the Rural activities room and the Emanuelli room, dedicated to the paintings of the artist Mario Emanuelli. In the inner garden grow typical Mediterranean scrub species, labelled with their Tabarchin names.
