About the museum
The MACC was founded on the initiative of the Municipality of Calasetta, thanks to the donation by the artist Ermanno Leinardi, who entrusted his collection to the town in 2000. The venue is a former municipal slaughterhouse, which had been abandoned for decades and was then restored and converted into an exhibition space.
The permanent collection reflects European trends in abstract art of the 1960s, largely the result of exchanges between artists, with later acquisitions. On the museum’s two floors, one room is dedicated to constructivist art, above all French, with works by Sonia Delaunay, and another to abstract art, with works by Italian artists such as Lucio Fontana, Giuseppe Capogrossi and Luigi Veronesi. The large works are arranged along a walkway about six metres above the floor, lit by a skylight that illuminates the whole space.
Alongside the art collection, the museum holds an archaeological collection and an open-air gallery. It hosts temporary exhibitions and, since 2024, the international artist residency programme Laboratorio Mediterraneo promoted by the MACC Foundation.
