About the museum
The Amatrice civic museum is housed in the former church of Sant'Emidio, once the church of the Madonna delle Laudi, a building of 14th-century origin that was modified over the centuries, in particular in 1874, when the west side was closed and the length of the nave reduced.
The collection brings together sacred art from the 13th to the 20th century: paintings, wooden sculptures, goldsmith's work, furnishings and liturgical vestments, and parts of processional machines. The museum is named after Cola dell'Amatrice (Cola Filotesio, born around 1480 and died in Ascoli Piceno after 1547), a painter, architect and sculptor whose works are shown alongside those of Dionisio Cappelli. Among the best-known pieces are the 15th-century processional crosses and the reliquary of the Madonna di Filetta, linked to the feast of the Ascension.
The 2016 earthquake caused the building to collapse; the works were recovered and secured. In 2025 the construction sites for the first phase of reconstruction were handed over, which will allow a gradual reopening; at present no reopening date has been given.
