About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Sant’Antonio, a former 18th-century convent in the centre of Cerreto Sannita, and is dedicated to the local ceramic tradition, which developed in particular after the earthquake of 1688. Founded in 1993, it opened its first exhibition in 1995 and in 2009 was recognised as a “museum of regional interest”.
The section of antique ceramics comprises around four hundred pieces, largely from the 18th century, coming from the former State Institute of Art and from private donations; since 2012 the Mazzacane collection, which includes productions from other centres in Campania, has been added on loan. The contemporary section (MARCON), in the cloister of the palace, holds works donated by the artists who took part in the Cerreto ceramics biennials.
The museum also houses a multipurpose centre with a ceramics workshop for groups and schools, a conference room and finds from the excavations of ancient Cerreto, and it organises events and educational activities.
