About the museum
The gallery is dedicated to Massimo Rao, born in San Salvatore Telesino in 1950 and died in 1996. After the liceo artistico (art school) in Benevento he studied architecture in Naples, and later lived in Bolzano and in Umbria. For his suspended atmospheres and his frequent lunar motif he is remembered as the “Pittore della Luna” (Painter of the Moon); his painting moves in a surreal, dreamlike climate, with a technique inspired by the old masters.
The gallery, inaugurated in 2012, brings the artist back to his home town. The museum occupies a municipal building in the historic centre and holds about 65 works by the artist, including drawings, prints and some oil paintings, spread across several rooms.
The gallery is promoted and run by the Associazione Massimo Rao, which organises guided tours for groups and educational initiatives for schools, as well as exhibitions and events dedicated to the artist.
