About the museum
The municipal museum of Fontanarosa, known as the museum of “Pietra, Paglia e Presepe” (Stone, Straw and Nativity Scene), stands below the village, a few metres from the historic core, along the road that once linked the settlements of the Fredane river valley. The building has large windows and a double-pitched roof with exposed iron trusses.
The basement level contains a multi-purpose hall equipped for conferences and seminars, plus two storerooms. The ground floor houses the municipal library, a small lecture room, the carro room and the sculpture room; on the first floor, with a panoramic view over the valley, is the nativity scene room.
The carro room is devoted to the traditional carro of Fontanarosa, a wooden obelisk covered in straw, which is linked to the festival held on 14 August. The museum sits in a large garden with numerous sculptures, a large fountain and stone paths: at its centre stands a Nike of Samothrace carved in local stone, while two large mortars, made by Fontanarosa stonemasons from blocks of more than a hundred quintals, mark the highest part of the garden. Most of the works were donated by Italian and foreign artists, including those who took part in international sculpture symposia.
