About the museum
The Museo di Arte Sacra (MAS) of Mirabella Eclano displays the artistic heritage linked to the religious life of the parish of Santa Maria Maggiore. It opened on 30 April 2009.
The route is spread over five rooms set in the spaces that once housed the confraternities of the Santissimo Rosario and of San Prisco, beside the church, on Via Eclano. It also includes the former chapel of the Madonna del Gonfalone, with an 18th-century majolica floor. During the works, wall remains from the 15th to the 17th centuries and a 13th-century kiln, possibly used to cast a bell, came to light beneath the floor; the structures can be seen through a glass walkway.
The sections include 18th-century liturgical vestments and copes, confraternity insignia and ornaments, silverware from the Neapolitan area such as a processional cross (croce astile) of 1682 and the reliquary bust of San Prisco, missals, antiphonaries and other old books, the historical archive and six bells, the oldest of which is Angevin, dating from 1274.
