About the museum
Aeclanum emerged at the end of the 3rd century BC at Passo di Mirabella, between the valleys of the Calore and Ufita rivers, and became one of the most important Samnite centres in Irpinia. After the Roman conquest the city gained the status of municipium at the end of the Social War; in 89 BC Sulla set fire to its wooden walls. Under Hadrian it was raised to the status of colony under the name Aelia Augusta Aeclanum and gradually acquired the buildings typical of a Roman city.
The ancient centre preserves the public baths, the macellum (covered market), houses and shops, a circuit of walls about 10 metres high with at least three gates, and an early Christian basilica with a baptismal font. Excavations begun in 2025 have also uncovered traces of the city forum and of a circular macellum.
