About the museum
The museum is housed in the church of San Domenico, a fifteenth-century building in exposed brick with a bell tower ending in a spire of coloured roof tiles. The church belonged to the Confraternita dei Battuti Bianchi, which handed it over to the Dominican friars in 1495. The original altars, frescoes and stucco decorations were lost through neglect and through damage in the Second World War.
In 1973 the Comune di Argenta reached an agreement with the Archdiocese of Ravenna to open the church to the public and display the paintings that had survived the bombing of April 1945. Today the museum holds paintings and sculpture of the Ferrara school from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century and an archaeological section with finds from the area of the Pieve di San Giorgio and from excavations in the historic centre carried out since the late 1980s.
