About the museum
The Museo della Bonifica is housed in the Saiarino pumping station, a splendid Liberty-style building inaugurated in 1925 by Vittorio Emanuele III, which is still active today as the heart of the land reclamation system on the right bank of the Reno. The museum tells the age-old story of the relationship between people and water in the lower Po Valley.
The route begins with a walk among the tools and machines used in land reclamation and reaches the pump room, with the six cast-iron pumps that lift the waters of the Lorgana canal. The room, decorated in Liberty style, is a monument of industrial archaeology; it also holds disused instruments and a working water-level recorder (limnigraph).
The visit also includes the thermoelectric plant with its boilers, turbine and alternator, as well as the “sala del grande click”, which shows how the old switches worked. The museum is part of the Ecomuseo di Argenta.
