About the museum
The Galleria Civica “Vittorio Emanuele II” is housed in the villa built for the Croze family to a design by the architect Carlo Costantini (1906), in an eclectic style, along the avenue that crosses the new centre of Vittorio Veneto, known as the viale dei Passeggi, della Concordia and then della Vittoria. The choice of this site, supported by Professor Giovanni Paludetti, was meant to fill a cultural gap in the new town centre, which lacked a cultural venue while the two historic centres already had them.
The gallery holds and displays the Collezione “Maria Fioretti Paludetti”, assembled over his whole life by Giovanni Paludetti (Vittorio Veneto 1912–2002), who dedicated it to his mother and wished the museum to be named after Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of Italy, a figure linked to the Risorgimento period that he particularly cherished. A teacher, headmaster and author of poetry books and essays on history and art, Paludetti expanded the collection with the aim of offering visitors, and students in particular, a broad route through the history of Italian art.
The collection numbers about 620 items among paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures and furnishings, from the 15th to the 20th century, with landscapes, portraits, still lifes and sacred and historical subjects. The main nucleus consists of 20th-century works, mainly by Veneto and Friulian artists, including Pio Semeghini, Virgilio Guidi, Filippo De Pisis and Felice Carena. The most represented artist is Guido Cadorin, with the “Figura verde” (Green Figure) of 1921 chosen as the icon of the collection. The route also includes the Sala Croze, the Sala di Cecilia and the Sala Risorgimento.
