About the museum
The museum is housed in the Torre della Campana, what remains of the castle on the summit of the Colle di Giano. The tower, which held the bell used to summon the town council, is the result of successive rebuildings: the deep loopholes at the bottom belong to the original Scaliger structure, the arched windows date from 1467, and the upper part, rebuilt after the collapse of 1491, was raised in 1847–55 with Ghibelline battlements.
A town museum was proposed as early as 1868, but only in 1946 did the tower house some collections. From 1952, under the director Alfredo De Mas, the original local-history focus turned mainly to artistic choices, enriching the picture gallery. From 1994 the museum also includes an archaeological section with prehistoric and Roman material found in the town and its area.
The route is spread over several floors: the picture gallery and the lapidarium, with detached frescoes and inscriptions such as the lion chiselled in 1797; the Room of the Fireplace, with its large hood in the shape of a ducal horn (corno dogale); and the archaeological section and documents of local history on the upper floors. At the top, a staircase leads to the battlemented terrace with a wide view over the Venetian plain and the Prealps.
