About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Malatestiano, in Piazza XX Settembre in Fano, a building commissioned by Pandolfo III Malatesta and built in the first half of the 15th century. The original core of the collections dates back to the 18th century and was formed from archaeological finds from the city and its territory, from works brought from the city’s churches after the suppression of religious orders, and from later bequests and donations.
The route, of sixteen rooms in four large areas, includes the archaeological section, the section of ceramics and coins, and the picture gallery. The archaeological part occupies six rooms on the ground floor and in the portico and documents the territory from prehistory to the Roman period of Fanum Fortunae, with the Panther mosaic, the milestones of the Via Flaminia, the statue of Emperor Claudius and a collection of inscriptions from the Colonia Iulia Fanestris.
The picture gallery holds paintings from the 14th to the 17th century, largely from suppressed churches. In the Sala del Caminetto (Fireplace Room) are altarpieces by Michele Giambono and by Giovanni Santi, father of Raphael. The Sala Grande (Great Hall) houses works by Guido Reni, Guercino, Domenichino, Mattia Preti, Simone Cantarini and Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri. The Sala Malatestiana is dedicated to the Malatesta family and holds the doublet of Pandolfo III, found in 1995 during the examination of his mummy.
