About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Fano was inaugurated on 14 December 2013 in the former Pontificio Seminario Regionale, now the Centro Pastorale Diocesano, at via Roma 118. The project had matured after the renovation of the rooms of the Episcopio (bishop's residence) and gave rise to the Lapidario (stone inscriptions) and Raccolta Museale (museum collection) sections.
The Lapidario occupies two large corridors on the ground floor around the inner garden and holds epigraphic, ornamental and figurative finds, mostly of unknown provenance, including a fine portal dated 1523, perhaps intended for the throne room of the Episcopio. The section continues along the two flights of stairs leading to the basement, with a collection of coats of arms of the bishops of Fano.
A large room in the basement houses the Raccolta Museale, with works of historical, artistic and liturgical interest: an ivory crozier given by Pope Pius V, two carved and painted wooden crucifixes (one from the late 13th century, the other from the 16th century), six canvases by Francesco Pittoni and a canvas by Claudio Ridolfi showing Pope Nicholas IV, founder of the city of Cagli.
