About the museum
The Museo della Via Flaminia is housed in the former church of San Michele, next to the Arch of Augustus. It opened in 2016 as part of the Flaminia Nextone project, co-financed by the Marche Region with the Distretto Culturale Evoluto and coordinated by the Municipality of Fano together with the towns along the ancient Roman route. It is a central hub of the Roman archaeological system of Fano, which includes the Augustan walls with their monumental gates, the theatre, the amphitheatre, the remains of the Augusteum and a cryptoportico.
This museum displays no finds, only original digital content designed to virtually reconnect the archaeological heritage of the city and of the territory along the ancient consular road. The route is spread over two rooms: visitors make an immersive journey through the history of the Flaminia using videos, video interviews, multimedia installations, headsets and augmented reality applications.
The route was updated and expanded in 2021, when the WebMuseum Via Flaminia was also created, a virtual exhibition that can be visited remotely. The story links the Flaminia to the city of Augustus and to Vitruvius, who built the basilica described in his De Architectura in Fano; the remains of the basilica resurfaced in Piazza Andrea Costa in January 2026.
