About the museum
The Museo di San Michele is a sacred art museum set up beside the Pieve di San Michele, in the territory of Massa e Cozzile. The exhibition spaces – the chapel of San Michele and two rooms – were part of the former Monastero della Visitazione (Visitation monastery) complex.
The chapel contains painted and gilded stucco decoration, commissioned from 1698 through Niccolò Giani, and paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries, including a Presentation of the Virgin at the Temple attributed to Luigi Crespi. In the large hall there is a choir with stalls on three sides.
The display cases hold liturgical vestments, such as a series in silk with gold thread, and precious sacred objects, including a 17th-century silver monstrance made by the Florentine goldsmith Paolo Laurentini. The museum opened in 2004 and is part of the cultural heritage managed by the Comune.
