About the museum
The diocesan museum gathers the sacred works of the diocese of Rieti and is set up in the rooms of the cathedral complex, in the historic centre of the city.
The route includes the baptistery, the sacristies of the lower basilica, the lapidarium and the audience hall of the 13th-century Palazzo papale (Papal Palace). In the room of San Giovanni in Fonte there is a 15th-century baptismal font with depictions of the theological virtues, next to local wooden objects from the 14th to the 17th century.
The collections include goldsmiths’ work from the cathedral and from the churches of the area, among them a series of nineteen processional crosses dating from the 13th to the 19th century, sculptures from the lapidarium and a picture gallery with medieval frescoes, canvases of the 17th and 18th centuries, and religious paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries.
