About the museum

The civic museums of Salemi are housed in the former Jesuit College, a building whose construction began in 1628 and was completed in 1739, following a resolution of the town council in 1596 requesting a Jesuit college. The order used it until its expulsion from Sicily in 1767, returned in 1819, and was driven out again by Garibaldi in June 1860. Later the palace served as a hospital and then as a school; the earthquake of 1968 made it largely unusable and it was restored in the 1980s.

In 1982 an agreement between the Curia of Mazara del Vallo and the municipality entrusted to Salemi, on loan and for storage, the works of the churches damaged by the earthquake. This gave rise to the section of sacred art, which occupies four rooms on the ground floor with Renaissance sculptures and Mannerist and Baroque paintings from the churches of the Carmine, Santo Stefano, San Tommaso and the Chiesa Madre; the museum was modernised and reorganised in 2007.

The museum system also includes the archaeology and Risorgimento sections, the Museo della Mafia e Officina della Legalità, the chapel of the Casa Santa di Loreto and the ecomuseum of wheat and bread, as well as the library and the photographic and video collections.
